1. Identify the exact claim
“Low sugar”, “sugar-free” and “no added sugars” are different statements. The last one also requires checking the recipe, not only a number in the nutrition table.
“Light” or “reduced” normally needs a meaningful comparison and an explanation of the characteristic that was reduced.
2. Verify the calculation
Use the values per 100 g or 100 ml where the legal condition is expressed that way. Protein claims are based on the proportion of energy supplied by protein.
Do not compare a per-serving number with a per-100-g threshold.
3. Read beyond the claim
A product can meet one claim and still contain other ingredients or levels that matter to the decision. The ingredients, allergens, portion and warnings remain relevant.
Claims should help describe the food, not replace the full label.
